LOTR Blog Parth Day Three - Favorite Dwelling of Middle Earth

 

Day Three!!!! You get to choose a favourite dwelling of Middle Earth and explain why you love it or why you think you would be there.



The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began

This is the easiest question of the whole party. My favourite dwelling place is The Shire. Why? I can tell you in three short sentences. .

It is simple.

It is beautiful.

It has Hobbit Holes.

I just love the Shire. I love the people. I love the peace. I love how green and warm everything is. I love that is always smells like summer and I love that it has little rivers and streams to jump in and I love that it is weighted with years of history and is so pure even the darkest shadow can't touch it until the very last moment. Also, where Hobbits get to live is brilliant. Hobbits holes are the best. They're cute and clean and warm and there are no stairs you have to climb. It is always full of food and comfort and it has a lovely round door that you can go in through and drop your cloak on a hanger. I would want to live in one. It would be so pleasant.

nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat

I think with my personality (as much as I love Rohan)  I would end up being a hobbit. I love food and I can eat almost as much as a normal hobbit on a good day. I love sitting in the quiet doing absolutely nothing. I love visiting with friends but still having my own space. I love peace but I also have a deep sense of adventure hidden away down in my heart. I love to feel relaxed and unstressed and there is no place better for that than the Shire

Because I am a hobbit from a well-known well-respected family I would have a lovely little hobbit hole in which my large, noisy family would often visit and spend all of their time baking, cooking and making music. It would be all warm and round and welcoming and I'd always have chocolate in the pantry and biscuits in the cupboard and tea in the spices box. We would stay up late into the nigh exchanging all sorts of tales (for many of my family would be the Tookish type) and we'd sing songs, even write them. We'd be a queer bunch to be sure. The Sackville-Bagginses would not be pleased of course, but their opinion doesn't matter anyway.  Most of Hobbiton would think we were odd - a bit too Tookish altogether to be honest - but they would keep their thoughts to themselves because our food and our courtesies would be so fine and so polite that all the Hobbits would want to be in good standing with us (except the Sackville Bagginses)

I would be the Hobbit no one would quite expect, nor no what to make of. The type of Hobbit who loves to read as much as the next person but doesn't much like sitting still and who acts respectable for her family, but is just the sort who would run off on an adventure at the drop of a hat. Most others hobbits would whisper about me behind their backs, talk about my queer family and how reckless I was - darn near unnatural for a Hobbit! Everyone would wonder about me but not many would really dislike me, and all would know how much I loved tea and reading and especially writing. "Ink all over the hands, papers stuck to tables and chairs. What a Hobbit. What a Hobbit...."

I have fantasies about my life in the Shire. Don't judge me.

LOTR Blog Party Day Two - Favorite Movie/Book

Today you get to choose a favorite movie or book (or both, if you are into that) and talk about it!

As Shocking as it may seem, my favorite book is The Two Towers. I know! That isn't the book most people choose; it's too boring, too slow, too flat, whatever. Yeah. I'll admit the first time I read LOTR I didn't like The Two Towers as much as the other two. It was really hard for me to get through it and I really struggled with the Ents. I think my biggest problem is that I'm a really fast reader and when it comes to Tolkien you have to take your time or you miss things. So when I read the trilogy again last summer I took it at a slower pace and I enjoyed it a lot more. The Two Towers went from being my least favorite to my FAVORITE. Why? There are a coupe different reasons. First off, you get to meet all the coolest characters and it is in this book that you get to spend the most time with them. You are introduced the to the freakin' Riders of Rohan!! HOW COOL ARE THOSE GUYS??? I want more of them, I want a whole book dedicated to them! (I ought to see if I can get one....) You get to meet Eomer and Eowyn, and let's be honest, they are brilliant. Eomer isn't in the story much but you love him by the time you finish a paragraph. And Eowyn. Eowyn! There is so much that is amazing about her! Tolkien did a really good job writing a strong, reckless female character without making her annoying or ridiculous - something most writers get wrong. She is graceful and beautiful but also fierce and wild. She is a lady - a lady with a noble, valiant heart but she is a lady none the less. I love her. And her fight against the Witch-King? OH MY GOSH. It was so epic. I looooooove that scene so much.

You meet King Théoden. And I don't care what you say, he is one of the best Kings every written on paper. I love how he is brought back from the darkness by Gandalf, like a sinner is brought back through grace. I love how he leads his people, giving them hope where there is none and giving them inspiration when he himself  has no comfort. I love how he rules and how he leads. Théoden is not just a simple King who sits on this throne, he is a man, a mighty warrior and fighter who is loved by his people and that is how it should be.

 I love Gandalf is any form to be quite honest. He is one of my favorite characters in the trilogy. He is so cool, even when he is just Gandalf the Grey. But I love how much Gandalf the White grows. It's like al his best qualities are strengthened and he is everything he can be and more. Anyway, you get a lot of him in the Two Towers, and that pleases me.

FARAMIR!!!!!!!!!

Yeah. I'm not going to lie. Faramir is the biggest reason The Two Towers is my favorite book. JUST. FARAMIR. That man is so very brilliant. He is my favorite one of my favorite characters. You gonna hear lots about him in the future. Promise 8-D  (Day Fooooour)

Finally, in The Two Towers you get a lot of character development. For filming purposes, Peter Jackson saved a lot of the character building for the third movie, which is fine, but the point is most of the story arks in the books actually happen in The Two Towers. A lot of my favorite arks happen, and a lot of the friendships grow and strengthen the most during that time. (LIKE FRODO AND SAM. JUST. THEM.)

Anyway, that is why the second book is now my favorite. I have dumped so much on you I don't know if I should talk about my favorite movie.... you know what? Whatever! It's my blog and its my party! I never get to do this!

My Favorite movie is The Return of the King.

I wish the ring had never come to me

As I said before, Peter Jackson moved a lot of the character development and friendship building into the third movie, and that is why I like it the best. It was also closer to the books then the Two Towers was as a film. (Again, I don't mind most of the changes. There were some I hated didn't like, but I understand why he did a lot of them.) Peter Jackson gave everything he had to that last LOTR film. The way he wrote the script was stunning. It takes my breath away. I love how he was able to weave lines from the books into the movies, even if it wasn't  a direct quote and I love the subtle scenes/quotes he would add as a nod to Tolkien and his work. He made mistakes when he did the second movie but when he got to The Return of the King everything came around in a full circle and there is almost nothing wrong with it. It was a practically-perfect adaptation of the story and I will always be thankful to him for being so generous and giving the fans what they wanted to see, even if he himself didn't approve. (something he should have done with The Hobbit.)

1.) How were you introduced to Tolkien? 

Goooosh. I.... I've known about Tolkien for as long as I can remember. It was something that was just a part of my life, like cookies or tennis shoes. My family are all huge Tolkien fans so I grew up with Lord of the rings a big part of my education. I remember hearing the soundtrack when I was really little and freaking out over the Black Rider music.

2.) Did you read the books before the movies or after? 

I read the books while I was watching the movies, but I didn't finish them until a few days after I saw The Return of the King.

3.) Do you like Tolkien's style of writing?  

I love Tolkien's style of writing! I know it isn't for everyone of course. It's a higher fantasy and it can be hard to read, but I find it beautiful and amazing. I love the way he uses the English language. It's so delicate and fine and his lines are always so epic. They make me happy, there nothing quite like them. And his sense of humor is amazing. I know that some people don't realize there IS humor in Tolkien's book. They don't catch onto it because of the 'high fantasy' it was written in. Can you believe that??? Those people say LOTR is boring and flat because nothing happens and the writing is too hard to read. They think that most of what the characters say doesn't even make sense now days!

4.) Do you like the film adaption? 

I love the film adaptions!!!! I think they are brilliant! I know Peter Jackson made a few mistakes but overall he did a really good job and I can forgive him for the stupid, unnecessary things.

5.) What is one thing from the books that you wish Peter Jackson had included in the films?

I wish that Eowyn and Faramir had kissed in the sight of many. I loved that scene so much. It would have been adorable. And sweet.

6.) What is one thing from the books that you are glad Peter Jackson cut/changed? 

There are a couple changes that I actually did like in the movies. I liked that the Elves came to help a the battle of Helm's deep. I liked that Theoden knew that Eowyn was there with him when he died. I liked that Merry was in the last battle and not left behind. (I am actually going to do a post about this soon. I'm reading the books right now and once I'm finished I'm going to do a books/vs movie post.)


7.) What character do you think has the most strength and courage? 

This one is really hard. I think if I have to be completely honest I am going to say.... Frodo. *Ducks away from fruits.* I KNOW I KNOW! All the characters are brave and heroic in their own way. They are all incredible characters with incredible courage and strength. I love them all. But Frodo.... I think Frodo was strong in all the ways that no one else could be. Where everyone else failed he succeeded. Where everyone else was overcome he pulled through. He was a very strong character. I mean... Most people were taken by the Ring in a matters of days, even hours, but he fought against it for months. He had the powers of darkness whispering in his ears for weeks and weeks and he managed to keep himself Frodo, even after all that time. He stumbled a few times yes, he got quiet and withdrawn and sometimes snappy, but that is only to be expected. He was carrying a terrible burden and it was not an easy thing to do. He tried his best to keep his sense of humor and kind, forgiving heart and even as the ring was taking hold he was still trying to keep that goodness, that pure simplicity. What he goes through and what the ring does to him hurts me.

8.) Which character do you think you are most like? 

I think I am the most like Merry, though there is a bit of Pippin in me too. I have Merry's sense of humor and I definitely have his ridiculous spirit and recklessness. But I am more serious too, like him, and I am very protective of those under me, always looking after everyone.

9.) Which is your favorite friendship?

I love the friendship between all of the hobbits especially Sam and Frodo, but I don't know if I can chooses one favorite friendship. Tolkien does so many amazing ones, even when they're small. I think.... I think I will go with Merry and Pippin. I relate the most to them on their quest and I adore how they are together. They are like brothers, it is so cute!!! They've chased each other around making mischief and trouble since forever and you would seldom see Merry without Pippin or vise-versa. They were silly, reckless hobbits who got pulled into the Quest of the Ring without much warning and they were very resourceful and brave and they were just.... they were really cool. I love how they protect and take care of each other. I love how they keep each other safe. I love how they can always count on each other, even when the world is falling apart around them. I love how their characters develop into such great men.

10.) Which is your favorite pairing?

Faramir and Eowyn. They had both lost so much. They were both so sad and alone and raw from grief and they both deserved happiness so much. I love how they are able to find peace and hope and joy together, even when there is so much that has gone wrong. Neither of them thought they would ever really find peace, but then they saw each other and they realized that maybe happiness wasn't altogether impossible. They understood each other in ways no one else could. They were isolated but they found comfort in each other and I just thought it was really beautiful and sweet. It makes me all emotional.

11) Which Middle -earth villain terrified you the most?

The Black Riders terrify me, they always have. They're like devils. And it's creepy. And I HATE their huge Nazgul things, they are awful. *Shudders* However, if Shelob counts as a villain then I would choose her. The idea of that thing even existing anywhere in the world freaks me out. I hate her. I hope she died from that wound Sam gave her. Very slowly. And painfully.

12.) What is your favorite quote from the books?

"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory, I love only that which they defend." - Faramir

 13.) What is your favorite quote from the movie? 

This is a really hard one. I love the quote where Sam is talking to Frodo and he says that there is good in this world, and its worth fighting for. That quote always inspires me and it usually makes me cry too. I also love the one where Gandalf is talking about the Mystery of death. I'm going to write out both. Cause I do what I want.

And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.” - Sam

 "End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it."


I didn't think it would end this way.

14.) Given the choice would you spend the day with a hobbit or with an elf?

Wow. This one is also hard! I do believe I would spend the day with.... Hm. I suppose it depends on which elves we were talking about. I would love to spend time among the Elves of Rivendell, but the Elves of Mirkwood would make me nervous. If I could spend a day in Rivendell then yes, I would choose the Elves over the hobbits. BUT I would stop by to take tea with them the next afternoon.

15.) Mirkwood or Moria? 

OH MY GOSH. WHY DO YOU ASK THIS OF ME??? If Moria was still Moria in all her glory and splendor, I may go to Moria, but otherwise I would choose Mirkwood.

16.)  What is your favorite Middle Earth dress/style?

I love how the Rohirrim dress. They are so light and their colors are warm and welcoming. Their clothes looks simple but lovely and I think I'd be very comfortable in them. However, I love how the Elves look. They're clothing is so beautiful. I want to own Elvish Clothing. I love it.

17.) Red, brown, small and round! What did you just think of? 

HOBBIT HOLE!


It was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort.

18.) Rivendell or Lothlorien? 


Rivendell. Lothlorien is beautiful but Rivendell has less of an early spring feel and more of a summertime feel.

19.) Would you rather visit Rohan or Gondor? 

IT DEPENDS ON THE POINT IN HISTORY YOU GUYS!!! GOSH! If Aragorn was King, that is a whole different matter then if there were still Steward's on the throne. However.... I think I was visit Rohan first. I love Rohan.



Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?

20.) What is something about Middle Earth that completely astounds you? 

EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!! LOL. No. I think the thing that astounds me the most about Middle Earth is how the ordinary is so easily mixed with the extraordinary. I love how real everything is. I love how you can look at Rohan, wonder how it came to be like it is and then be able to FIND OUT because Tolkien was nuts and wrote the entire history of his world. I love how you can take a character and follow his life and what he did. I love how you can take a race and read about how they came to be, where they were originally from and why they are like they are. It is so cool!!!!!! Tolkien was a genius. That is all I'm saying.

GET IN LOSERS WE'RE GOIN' VACATIONING

PINKIE PIE!!!

This weekend I an on a mini-vacation. My bestest friend went out of town and asked me to look after their house, so I've been sleeping over at her place.

I brought my sister, because sisters always make things better.

WE ARE HAVING SO MUCH FUN! Last night we made this FAbulous coffees with their Fabulous coffee maker and we had chocolate and stayed up past midnight doing whatever we want. Like writing. And shouting. And listening to loud music. And watching Flashpoint and having a Grimm marathon. BECAUSE. GRIMM. - on this note, Grimm is making me very fangirly right now. I keep screaming and yelping and shouting and grinning. I love Season 3. It is so good. I love how interesting the characters are. I love the stories. I love the plots. I love the friendships. I love Monroe. I love Rosalee and Juliette. I even love strange little Woo. And I really, really love Nick. NICK IS A BADAPPLE.
